Wendell Phillips Academy Winning on the Football Field and in the Classroom

Phillips HS Football 2015Wendell Phillips Academy High School (244 E. Pershing Rd.) has won the 2015 Illinois State 4A Football Championship!  They beat Belleville Althoff 51-7 to claim the crown in front of a raucous crowd at DeKalb's Huskie Stadium   They are the first Chicago Public League school to win a state championship in football.  This is an amazing accomplishment for the players, faculty, staff, students and the community.  Congratulations Phillips!!

This historic achievement is matched by unprecedented gains in the classroom.  Once considered one of the poorest academic schools in the state, Phillips High School has now improved to a Level 2 rating.  This is positive growth for both the students and the community and should also be celebrated.  Thank you to Principal Matthew Sullivan, the teachers, staff and AUSL leadership for all they have done academically and athletically to help neighborhood children grow.  Let's continue this positive trend and support our students, not only at Phillips but at all of our local 3rd Ward schools!
